Home Education – Landscaping Oklahoma

School projects are plentiful in the spring and in the fall. Girl Scouts selling cookies in front of every Walmart & kids canvasing the neighborhood selling candy or magazine subscriptions. And it seems that every project they’re raising money for is similar – some sort of field trip, or band equipment, or sports stuff.
Home School Project Changes Neighborhood - Landscaping Oklahoma
We have discovered three young, home schooled boys that are doing something a little different. They are selling gardening and landscaping rakes. And what is the reason they are selling rakes? Because they want to raise money for their own microscope.
The children live in Oklahoma City. When we spoke with their parents they told us that the boys; ages 5, 9 & 11; “…are very interested in science. So when we talked with them about doing a project they actually came up with the microscope idea. We thought it was a great idea! They can raise money for something that is going to last longer than a chocolate bar. They will be able to use it year after year.”
The boys are looking forward to all the things they can look at under their microscope during the summer and the new things they will learn in science next school year.
Interview with the Boys:
CIDA News: How did you come up with a microscope? I mean, it seems like a strange type of fundraiser.
Lukas: (the second oldest and the speaker for the group) Well, our Papa does research of algae. He grows algae and is trying to make a reactor to make biofuel. So it seemed like a cool idea! Now we can look at our own algae – and bugs and stuff with our own microscope.
CIDA News: That makes sense. What about the rakes – why rakes and not something like pens, cookies or things like that?
Lukas: That’s easy! Our Uncle invented these rakes, and they’re really great! He is a professional Landscaper & inventor here in Oklahoma. His company is ZoopCorp.com. He says his rakes are so easy to use even a boy can use them!
CIDA News: Well it sounds like you have quite a family. How close are you to getting your microscope?
Josiah: (the oldest boy) After we pay for the rakes and tithe – we are about a third of the way there. We want to get a good microscope that will last and that we can attach to the computer to make the pictures bigger.
CIDA News: Do you mean you actually have to pay for the rakes yourselves?
Lukas: Yes! Our Papas says it part of learning how to do business. Learning how to manage wholesale and retail sales.
CIDA News: And what about you? What’s your name?
Samuel: I’m Samuel!
CIDA News: Well Samuel, what do you do to help?
Samuel: I’m the cute one (he says with a little smile)!
CIDA News: I can see that! What are you going to do with the microscope? Aren’t you a little young?
Samuel: I’m going to look at bugs – and I’m almost six!
CIDA News: It sounds like you boys are learning lots of thing while you’re raising money for a good cause. I hope you sell enough rakes soon.
The Boys: Thank You!
These boys were the most polite boys I have had a chance to talk with in a while. They sounded like a couple of future 22nd century Entrepreneurs and we wish them the best of luck.
